Travel Bans

Herkimer and Otsego Counties are under travel bans. The Otsego ban begins at 5 PM. Road crews simply cannot keep up with the heavy snow. Snow totals in Otsego County range from 18-24" on average, with much higher amounts in the eastern half of the county.

Regardless of travel bans and states of emergency, travel is just not adviseable tonight. There are very few things that you have to do tonight that cannot be done tomorrow. Let's let the road crews get a handle on things.

We have 38.5 inches so far and now the wind is picking up here. I doubt that the roads will be open by 8am. They may have to put off travel for a while. Has anyone lost electric from the winds?
We are getting prepared here now.

We're sitting here in Mohawk. My husband is outside running the snowblower for the 4th time today. It is still snowing very hard and the wind is really, really blowing and gusting now. The visibility is downright limited. Have to work in Utica tomorrow, but right now it doesn't look possible.

Any one out there with any idea how much longer it is going to be snowing...Ilion, Mohawk, Herkimer way?

the roads here in the city (little falls) are next to impassable, a snowmobile may be the only way to get around here for awhile, rt 5 is maybe 6 ft wide thru the city, with a foot or more of snow covering the road, the streets look like tunnels!

Still snowing pretty good here in Oneida. So I would imagine that you still have more to come, and with stronger winds now as it is getting windy here and still coming down pretty good. Be safe.

Don't forget Chenango County is in that ban on travel as well!! Also quick new update on Snow total for Sherburne- we now have 27.5" with some gusts of wind. The State of Emergency and Travel ban is until 6:00 AM tom. morning.

What does it mean when a state of emergency is declared? And what makes one county decide to declare that? I have not heard of any travel bans or state of emergency in Montgomery Co. and we have over 40 inches! I live on a secondary road off of Rt. 80 and a snow plow has yet to pass down my road once. I have't even seen a snow plow on Rt. 80 in hours.

Do you think 5s will be open tomorrow morning? I work in Utica & Im just not sure with the way things are going currently if I even make it there!!!

Car,

My best guess is that road crews will be able to get out around 10 PM or so and begin the task of road clearing. Utica and points west shouldn't be too hard to clear, as we got a lot of snow, but nothing insanely copious. East of Utica though, in the 30-40" zones, it will take awhile to get things clear. Roads like 5, 5S, the Thruway, etc. should be up and running by morning I would think, depending on how aggressive road crews are overnight. They won't have much new snow to worry about.

I believe a State of Emergency is Declared by the Legislators or some other Government Official of that County. I also believe that a state of emergency mean that they want people to know that it is really bad out and that no one should be out in it unless it is absolute neccessary.

I mean I was watching a newscast tonight and a woman was upset about not being able to get to the store as they plowed her into her own driveway. But yet people complain that the plows arent out enough they cant win.

In my job I have to report to work, there is no shutting us down due to bad weather or power outages. So what if I couldn't get out of my driveway ( and I really couldn't) I live close enough that I was able to walk to work so some else didnt have to come in and jepodize theirs and others safety. So that is my defination of State of Emergency.

Think there's any chance they'll close Utica Schools for tomorrow? I know the snow is supposed to stop, but the strong, freezing wind will still be around. I would think that could cause a few problems.

I think there may be more delays than closings tomorrow. We'll see though. We can't predict those ;)

In Ilion, I expect the snow to really start winding down in the next 1-2 hours. The back edge of the moderate snow is through Utica, and the back edge of the light snow is now through Syracuse. Accumulations for most, if not all of CNY should be on the order of a trace to 2" for the rest of the night.

I think the main problem is going to be wind also! Its gonna cause visibility issues for all open highways! Therefore it will probably be impossible to drive tomorrow too !

Is there a website that officially shows the county wide "travel bans"/road closings and reports when they're lifted or expired?

My father's having surgery tomorrow and I want to be able to look in the morning and make sure Herkimer County still isn't under a travel ban before I head out.

As of 8:00 we have 21.5 inches in Lairdsville.Snowing lightly.

I believe that the travel ban is that your on your own if you go off the road and what not. Towtrucks are working on getting essential people to and from work if needed. And the plows are getting the roads clear.

I know that our state of emergency came from the county directors and supervisors. Basically they did it to get as many people off the roads so that the plows can go out and take care of business. I know that they did it till 6:00 am so that the county plows could go home sleep a little and come back in the morning to get things ready for the commute. The big thing right now down here is the wind and the county was worried about blowing and drifting.

The snow has finally stopped here in Whitesboro and the Total Storm Accumalation is 19.0"
When I woke up this morning at 8am
and saw 10.5 inches already I thought I was in for a record breaking storm as I still had about 12 hours more of snow coming.
The snow stayed at no more than an inch an hour here so things didn't get totally out of hand. The Christmas Storm I received the exact same amount but it came in 12hrs instead of 24hrs.

The Northway (I-87) is shut down between Exits 28 and 33 due to blizzard conditions. Lots of tractor trailers that are just stuck.

Cedarville-the hills south of Ilion. The snow has stopped but the wind is REALLY whipping and whistling around the house. Now drifting and visibility become big issues. Keeping roads open in this is difficult.

Matt.. now that this storm is over how are we looking for LES tomorrow night into Friday. Looks like a favorable flow for the area.

Rob...posted an entry on lake effect. Not a bad setup, but not too terribly impressive. Low end warning criteria seems possible.
