Nor'Easter '07 Packing a Punch.

Snows have rapidly piled high this morning all across the area. Several communities have already issued snow emergancies and we're not through with the heavy accumulations just yet.

As of the 9:00 hour, many areas have already received anywhere from 8"-12" of accumulation. So far at our studios, 9" of snow has accumulated with snowfall rates averaging about 1" per hour for the past several hours. An ongoing list of updated snowfall reports from our SkyWatchers can be found at http://www.wktv.com/weather/home/5273071.html .

Gleaning from the latest computer model data, our snowfall forecast will remain the same...for now. The 6Z run (always take 6 and 18 with a grain of salt) of the WRF shows slightly less precipitation than last evening's 00Z run (see: http://www.meteo.psu.edu/~gadomski/ETAPA_6z/etaloop.html ) on the order of 1 1/2 to 2" liquid equivalent (as opposed to 3" or more). We don't put nearly as much weight in our forecasts with these "off hour" model runs. If the 12Z incarnation of the WRF corroborates this though, then we may need to consider shifting our 12-24 that we currently have for areas west of Syracuse...just a smidge further east. Still it appears that some areas will cash in with over 30", especially east of Utica.

Happy shoveling all!

We have 13" here in Sherburne (Northern Chenango) and still snowing very hard (about 1" an hour for most the morning) Hey Mike from Binghamton- Did you hear anything about the EMS class for Tom. at the Public Safety Building being cancelled???

Your lucky to be able to say it's snowing up here. Hopefully it comes up and packs a punch!

Village of Herkimer starting to get 2" a hr. It is really coming down out there. Totally reminds me of the xmas 2002 storm. No wind yet just a little gust every once in a while snow is coming straight down. Noreaster's ROCK !

Albany is under a Blizzard Warning right now...We have about 10 inches on the ground and you can barely see outside...winds are around 13 mph...Temp is 10 degrees with a wind chill of -5....definatly a weather geeks dream:)

In Boonville at 11;30am, eight inches accum., snowing moderately, winds 20mph, temp 2*F.

Finally plowed out but lots of other shoveling to do!!!!! Later!!

I'm getting some pretty gusty winds here. Some places you can't even tell I've shoveled.

This storm doesn't compare at all to the x-mas storm of 2002. This storm is lacking the banding that created the 30+ inch snowfall. The snow accumulation maps should be lowered back to the 18-24 inch range. No banding makes this a much weaker storm. There is maybe 13-14 inches of snow down this way.

Mike in Leonardsville...since Dolgeville just came in at 18", I think we're in good shape. For you personally it may not compare, but for others it is, and will continue to do so.

Well at least we had good weather in Nov, Dec and most of Jan.

What can you do...New York is one tough state to live in. Major taxes, major humidity, major snow, major gas prices..

On a more positive note and to look on the bright side...at least we don't get earthquakes, volcanoes or tsunamis!

13 inches here as of 12:15. Really haven't had any heavy snow here but its been steady at about an inch an hour. Looking at radar and it looks to be rough in Otsego and southern Herkimer counties. As this storm further stengthens the heavier band could still clip the eastern sections of Oneida county.

Actually Id agree with the volcano's and tsunami's but Plattsburgh just had a 5.2 earthquake a few years ago. It took out some roads and shook houses down this way. But yes, it could be worse. For instance, rattlesnakes, spiders. etc

rob, how much strengthening is expected, and are we still looking at 24 to 30 inches in the utica area?

With the winds starting to pick up I think the teeth of the storm is starting to arrive here in Holland Patent . It has been snowing a light fine snow all morning with very little wind but now it is starting to intensify .I am beginning to think that what was ealier was a teaser .

The band of very heavy snow appears to be moving in a WNW direction just entering southern herkimer county, its been maintaining that direction most of the morning. Do you think it will reach as far as rome?

Joycebr said...

Now wait a minute---I live in Northern Oneida County/foot hills of Adirondacks and I've encountered a rattlesnake or two on occassion up north---I'd rather have the snow!!!!!!! And yes---an occassional earthquake to boot!!!! ha ha

WOW snowfall here must be in the 2-3" an hour range, heavy snow falling with an occasinal wind gust, snow is piling up quick! Visibility looks less than a 1/4 mile

Anonymous said...

The band is pivoting this way but I think it will effect more of the southern Herkimer county area. We still could get into some 2 inch rates for a period in the Utica area to Ilion. It'll be a close call. As far as the 24-30" totals, I think we will be on the low range of that scale 24-26" for the immediate Utica area.

it is so annoying to be only 20 miles from 2-3 inch an hour snowfall and not get it, I'm in utica

Based on the reports we've seen so far, the snow forecast should be fine. The heaviest snosw, as expected is to our east. THe axis of ridiculous snow is from Oneonta through Cooperstown into Little Falls, Dolgeville and Fort Plain, central Fulton and Montgomery Counties. Snowfall totals should approach 20-25" in spots there between now and 4 PM.

Another that's holding back totals is the snow ratio on average is about 12:1. Even though its in the lower teens the flow off the ocean is very moist keeping it more of a grainy snow than a fluffy snow. Whoever is checking e-mails for snow acc. at WKTV, I keep forgetting to put my name on the e-mail but the last reprt of 13.5" in Whitesboro was from me (ROB)

We have about 14.5" to 14.75" in Lairdsville as of 2:15pm. It has started snowing considerably harder over the last 45 minutes or so. The wind really hasn't been a factor so far.
Matt, Rob ,somebody, do you think we really will get another 10"-15" before this thing winds down?

Anonymous said...

We had 15" in Fort Plain at 12:00 this afternoon. The snow has been coming down at an enormous rate since then. We have received at least another 6-8" on the ground in the past two hours. Right now visibility is extremely poor, and the wind is starting to pick up. We are wondering, how long this heavy band of snow is supposed to continue here? We've heard reports that it will continue until 5:00 and then some Albany stations are saying the heavy snow will continue until 8PM or 10PM. Can anyone shed some light on what the predictions are? Either way, I'm glad that I'm home and not driving in this mess!

The winds here are VERY strong. I would think they need to issue a high wind advisory.

I was shoveling, and then the wind picked up. Turn around, I might as well as have not have shoveled!

So far, storm total for Port Leyden is 8"

No wind here. The snow is coming straight down.
Dave..Looks like the heaviest of the snow is a miss. But we'll have to see how the wrap around sets-up. Going by radar as of now I think an additonal 4-7" will about do it for the Utica area.

What impact will the lakes have as the storm push out?

Just measured snow totals here in Fort Plain. Since noon we've received another 14"! That makes about 29" since the storm began last night at 9:00. It's still snowing heavily here. At this rate we might hit the 36" mark. Guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Paris Hill is still snowing very consistent. Plows are doing there jobs. LET IT SNOW!!!!!

Mike S (Port Leyden) said...

Oddly enough, it looks as though it's trying to use Herkimer as a pivot, and is swinging around that counter-clockwise.

Dave (Lairdsville) said...

Thanks Rob,
Even if we only get 4 or 5 more inches of snow, It will still put us around the 20 inch mark. Not bad-I'll take it.

Lake Ontario shouldn't be much of a concern with us at least in the next 12-18hrs. It will inhance the snows over the southern Lake Ontario shoreline (Roch). We could see some LES here tommorrow night into Friday.

Totals are updated now and should be current. I'll post a post in a minute.

I am here in Mohawk where it is snowing heavy and getting very windy. It looks like sheets of snow just constantly blowing out there. We live about 4 houses from the Main Street, and you can barely see up there right now!

Wow what a great storm!!! We are offically at 19" in Sherburne as of 2:00 pm and still snowing very hard with about 1/4 mile visibility. Also, the fax number we have for you guys up in WKTV land is wrong, anyway I can get that number for media faxes??? Chenango county will officially be in a state of emergency after 7:00 pm with all roads closed in the county until 6:00AM Thursday morning.

I live near the black river in Forestport, and the snow is coming down pretty good here. Some blowing of snow on the back roads from Boonville to Forestport causing white out conditions. Everyone travel safe if you have to.

Just in from shoveling-unofficial snow total of 30" measured in the backyard. Seems to be coming down at least 3" an hour.
