Here Come the Big Numbers!

Someone will be pushing 40" by the time this is over.

32" Schenevus
31" Piseco
30" Cooperstown
25-30" Little Falls
29" Fort Plain

These numbers continue to rise as heavy snow continues.

With this secondary band right now west of Utica sliding east, expect no let up in the heavy snow over the next 2-3 hours.

OK..now it's really coming down..this is the hardest it has been all day!! You cannot see anything...it looks like a blizzard out there!! I am wondering if there will be school for the kids tomorrow...I have my doubts!! If it is like this up in Lee, Rome should be getting slammed. ..are they going to declare a state of emergency too??

I can't believe its still snowing and we are just going into driving ban. I think we have over 30 inches on Briar Hill Road in Eastern Otsego County!!!

I believe we had 21.5 inches in Oneida at 5:30pm and it was still coming down pretty good. The end of my block is only .10 of a mile and I could not see the corner with the snow and the blowing snow. The wind has definitely picked up.

Matt please let me know if I am doing my measurements right:

I did 12 spots of untouched snow where I know it was snow just from this storm. I used the sidewalk in the back of my house. It was shoveled prior to me going to work at 8:00 am..

I reported and average of 13.7 inches as of 7:24 this mornin before shoveling.

When I got home there was an average of 7.8 more inches. Untouched and unshoveled from the time I went to work.

So that would make our total 21.5 inches thus far... Correct?

PS Matt I loved what you tried to do during the Newscast today at 5:00pm. Never thought about using a car to get my calculations. thanks for the Idea and keep up the great work.

Roxann,

I think you did it pretty right! We usually like grassy surfaces, but a lot of times that's because the sidewalks are warm...certainly not today! :) Thank you. Taking 10 measurements, at least, and averaging them is the right way. We received a couple of totals today that we've flagged because they did not jive with anything else around them.

Matt:

I am extremely impressed by WKTV's coverage of this snowstorm. This blog is a great idea and resource! I know you are busy, but I have some snowfall questions for you.

1. When will the final official National Weather Service snowfall amounts be released?

2. How does the National Weather Service and WKTV typically cross-reference the accuracy of the general public's reportings? I know there are several trained spotters in the area, as well.

Edwin:

We send all our numbers down to the NWS. Whether they use them or not, is on them. A lot of times they pick and choose what they like. We do the same. We received reports of 45-55" in Dolgeville from this event, but we won't be reporting them because we feel that they were inaccurately measured. We have our own network of people we know we trust, and we like to see how their numbers jive with the other viewers that report in periodically (during big events). So it's a big judgement call basically.

The NWS will issue a preliminary final total list tonight. I'll send our finalized totals to them tonight as well. They'll issue a final report tomorrow or Friday, depending on how busy they are.

The wind is blowing the snow around so much it is difficult to see the end of my driveway. The snow has stopped, but the wind is wicked.
