Everything Going to Plan for the Most Part!

We're satisfied with our snow forecast. Officially, we've got Utica pegged at 16" as of 1 PM, but that is likely closer to 18" right now, and 3-6" more should be attainable over the next several hours. Snow totals can be found here: http://www.wktv.com/weather/home/5813391.html

Just to summarize. Clearly, Otsego, eastern Herkimer, Hamilton, Fulton and Montgomery Counties, as expected, have been the hardest hit, with 29" in Fort Plain, 26.5" in Piseco (near Lake Pleasant), 24" in Stratford and 23" in Little Falls.

The intense banding is beginning to weaken a bit in that area right now. Snow rates should come down subtley in the next hour, but will still have heavy snow.

Over the Finger Lakes, we are starting to see additional signs of banding ongoing. As this slides east, we should maintain the intensity of the snow for most of CNY, at times having it come down a bit heavier. The evening rush hour (if you can call it that tonight), will be messy. Snow should begin to taper to flurries after 7-10 PM.

As far as snow ratios for this event. Clearly they are high. Assuming about 12-14" in Westmoreland, we have a report of 0.40" of liquid. That's bordering on a 20:1 ratio. In between here and Albany, snow ratios don't mean much because it's just snowing like crazy. East of Albany, snow ratios are probably closer to 8:1 or 9:1....this is because of sleet mixing in at times.

Just to hit on the lake effect issue. Things will be calm overnight, with flurries (a good time to dig out). Most of Thursday will see periodic flurries, but probably nothing worse than that. Thursday night, lake effect will become better organized. Currently, we feel that the North Country will be in the target zone for this aspect of the event. We'll focus on that later tonight.

That's all for now. We just got some information in... Little Falls City Schools are closed for Thursday.

Now that we're getting repeat totals in from viewers, we have 3" per hour in Springfield (per NWS), 4.5" in 2 hours in Newport, 6" in 5 hours in Unadilla Forks. Keep in mind that 1" per hour is considered heavy snow.

I think you are right Rob - I read on one of the NWS discussions that they wanted to wait for the current headlines to expire and then LES watches/warnings will be issued for tomorrow & Friday.

Snow flakes are beginning to increase in size here, and its coming down very heavy, not much wind yet, i can't get an accurate snowfall because the snow keeps sliding off the roof. very hard to see down the street, looks to be a 1/8 of a mile visibility

matt, do you believe Port Leyden should be getting any more snow?

Matt, 19" in Sherburne I emailed you. Also is there a way I can get a fax number for sending out our media's to you? The one we have never works!

Matt Lanza said...

Jeff, 315-793-3498 is the fax.

Port Leyden should continue to see snow at the current rates for another 2-4 hours and it will lighten up some more. You guys seem to be underachieving in both lake effect and with this.

Well watching radar it looks like a band of moderate snow is trying to develope on the western edge of Oneida County . Sorta looks like the battle ground for the storm as it continues to push Northeast . I may be wrong in reading this but it seems that battle ground has been there all morning now air from the Northwest seems to be winning .

Matt, current rates? All I have is gusting.

Joycebr, how bad's it snowing in Boonville?

Joycebr said...

friends in Utica are saying 20" on the ground????

What happened up north????

Joycebr said...

its moderate snow--been all day gradually accumulating to ten inches now in the village but it is really blowing: 20mph and cold -1*F. Trying to snowblow the sidewalks but its brutal outside!!!!

I measured 15.5 so far here. Snowing at just about an inch an hour all day. Winds are picking up and visabilities are going down. Maybe we can get into some good wrap-around here and pick up another 4-5 inches.

Joyce, Frankfort/Utica line had 19" earlier, so, that would jive. Mike...I have no idea how you're getting nothing. West Leyden is up to 15", Boonville at 10". Strange to say the least.

to give an idea, i parked my truck in the driveway at 1 PM, the snow has reached back up to the bottom of the door again, time to go back out and hit the driveways again!!

Thank you for these reports guys!

Update on road closure. Herkimer County has now issued a travel ban. The only vehicles allowed on the roads are emergency vehicles, snow plows, tow trucks, and essential personnel reporting to these jobs. This means stay off the roads folks or you could be looking at tickets and your insurance won't cover you if something happens!

Matt,
Since 2:15 we picked up 2.75 inches bringing the total for Lairdsville to 17.5 inches.

Dave (Lairdsville) said...

By the way the radar looks, Little Falls appears to be getting pounded!

Dave (Lairdsville) said...

Looks like the storm is showing signs of weakening in the south.

We are getting hammered right now..you can't even see across the road. We have probably had over 20" of snow...but it is hard to tell with the wind. I cleared once today around noon, but it is up to the bottom of our truck again. My son just called from Rochester...they have about 18" of snow, and still falling...

Its 5 Degrees in Floyd, The snow and winds have recently picked up substantially. Winds appear to be around 10-15mph. Because of the blowing all day I really cant find anywhere to get a good estimate of snowfall totals, definitely around 15 inches.

16 inches here. Still some mod-hvy bands around the area. 3-4" inches still possible. LES Watch now for the area Tom. Ngt.- Friday. Looks like a favorable 280-290 flow. It just never ends.

getting heavier in Boonville now and really blowing, extremely porr visibility, elevn inches on the ground.

Mike S (Port Leyden) said...

i think there'll be school closings simply due to the drifting.

Schools are already closing in Montgomery county for tomorrow. It's still snowing pretty heavily here, and the visibility is extremely poor. I haven't measured snow totals lately, but I'm sure we have in excess of 30", probably closer to 36" here. Blizzard warnings are still in force until 6AM tomorrow. I hope people stay home tonight, and limit their travel.

Mike S (Port Leyden) said...

I went out to shovel out the mailbox, and people were snowmobiling down the road.

The thing is my district for some reason will never close until 5AM.

Snowing pretty good still here. Finally made it up to 18 inches.
Looks like the heavier snow fell just to the east to me in the city.

Here in Mohawk....just went outside to take some pictures. When that wind kicks in it is downright unbearable out there. Still snowing hard. Snowbanks are taller than we are! Looks like another day in the house together tomorrow! Our fire department is trying to get men out to help shovel out the hydrants. Just a reminder to you out there, if you have a fire hydrant on your street, take a moment to shovel it out. It could make all the difference in an emergency.
